PLM's Coffee Hour

"Ating Kapihan para sa matatag na Samahan"

Come & hang out at PLM Coffee Hour

Members of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila Alumni Association (PLMAA) in Toronto held their first regular PLM’s Coffee Hour at the Golden Valley Restaurant last Sept 14, their 2nd on Oct.5 and another one is scheduled on Nov.9 at the same venue.
Held every second Sunday of the month, the four-hour social affair starts at 2 p.m. and it is aimed at reaching out alumni living in Toronto and its environs. It’s a great opportunity for PLMers to reconnect and mingle with their former classmates, batch mates and friends; and to reminisce their good old days at Pamantasan. The PLM Coffee Hour is also an informal forum for them to share their thoughts and ideas on how best they can extend help and support to their former alma mater. Come and join us; and get involved. PLM alumni host grand reunion in Manila

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila Alumni Association (PLMAA) is hosting a grand alumni reunion & homecoming in Manila on February 25 - March 3, 2009 to commemorate its school’s 43rd anniversary.

The school's 43rd founding anniversary dinner-dance will officially kick off the " 2009 PLM Grand Homecoming:PLM @ 42 "Apat ng Dekadang Walang Kakupas-kupas" at 7 p.m. on June 19, 2008 at the Student Acitivity Center.

Alumni belonging to Batch ’68 led by Richard Prado are spearheading the week-long event. And they are inviting all alumni to join the affair and meet up and renew their bond of friendship and camaraderie with their former classmates and schoolmates whom they have not seen for years. Prado, now a retiree, is formerly the country representative of the Unicef.

Prado said the holding of the reunion with its theme “4 Na Dekada…Walang Kakupas-kupas”marks the 42nd year since the PLM opened its gates to the first batch of scholars in 1967, thereby making the school the country’s first free university for the poor but deserving students of Manila.

As he expressed his gratitude to PLM President Atty. Adel Tamano for “re-opening the campus gates to the alumni community”, Prado also issued the invitation to all alumni to attend the reunion, saying “let us re-trace our steps back to our alma mater, to feel and celebrate the PLM spirit once more”.

The organizers are expecting a big turnout of alumni attending the reunion and this early, some PLMers living overseas—Canada, US, Australia—have informed the organizing committees on their 100 percent willingness to attend the event. They hope to gather together the 42 batches of graduates from 1969-2008 from all over the Philippines and the world.

Leading the alumni attendees is the newly-installed president of the PLM Alumni Association (PLMAA), Caesar Apostol, Batch '68.

At present, the alumni hosts are bracing up for the coming busy months, preparing the various reunion’s activities such as the holding of sports games , cocktails, bus tour, symposium and Coffee Hour, all aimed at making the homecoming “ An Affair To Remember”.

To insure the success of the event, the Batch ’68 aided by some alumni from the pioneers group have lined up a number of activities that will give those attending the reunion enough time to be together in reminiscing their fond memories and dreams that they have kept to themselves through the years.

On Day 1, there will be a parade and review with President Tamano making the welcoming remarks and Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, delivering the keynote address. A symposium on the” PLM—Responsibility to Moral Accountability and Social Responsibility” and a Coffee/Music Hour with Tamano, faculty members and the students body are scheduled in the afternoon session.

On Day 2, the whole morning is reserved for the holding of a medical/ dental project billed as “ Mula Sa Puso ng Nagbabalik-tanaw”.And cocktails/dinner/dance is slated at the Manila Hotel Fiesta Pavilion-- alumni groups including those from PLM overseas chapters are expected to show off their musical/ entertainment talents.

On Day3, it’s a 3-day, 2-night “Sagada Tour”. See you all on this once-in-a-lifetime homecoming!!

Our Manila PLM reunion--"An Affair To Remember"

Let’s make the PLM reunion
“Our Affair To Remember”

I’m very sorry for this late response; I was so busy the past week. Anyway, I read the minutes of your meeting-- and that you’re planning to get a high profile speaker to grace our forthcoming alumni homecoming, hoping that with this popular speaker we could get enough media mileage and exposure

If I may suggest, I think our reunion should focus more on the alumni and the members of the university community: the teaching and administrative staff and the students. We are supposed to hold this affair with one objective in mind—to meet up and renew our ties with our classmates and schoolmates whom we haven’t seen for years, thereby reminiscing with them our fond memories and dreams

Our reunion is a great time to relax, exchange a never-ending kamustahan and be ourselves, free from the cares of the world. In short, let’s make this gathering Our Affair to Remember. After four decades, the PLM has produced outstanding men and women in various professional fields- school deans, lawyers, doctors, nurses, journalists, professors businessmen, engineers, board topnotchers, officials of national and international organizations and many others. I strongly believe we can get one good, home-grown keynote speaker among us who can speak for all of the alumni--.someone who’s the epitome of the PLM ideals. If we could do this, then we have all the reason to commemorate our “4 Na Dekada na Walang Kakupas-kupas”
.
Being an alumni event, could we possibly de-politicize the reunion, meaning no-speeches from politicians and I’m sure even our school president Tamano would understand this stance. Well, we can just have a tour on the PLM with him and a courtesy call with Manila Mayor Lim.
Another point is why we don’t take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime gathering to come up with a big, really big project for the benefit of the poor students. What I have in mind is the putting up of The Pamantasan CafĂ©. We have a captured market, the thousand alumni the PLM has produced’ through the years and the profits generated from this venture could be used to fund the scholarships and other programs. To raise the needed capital, all we have to do is, invest $ 100 each, and if there are 500 alumni joining in, then we can have enough capital to start the business. The 500 investors will have one share of stock each, entitling them to have one vote and no one should be allowed to have more than one share of stock, thereby preventing anybody from having controlling interest in the business. So all the 500 will be shareholders of the corporation. As shareholders, now we could elect the members of the board who would eventually manage the business. This is just an idea, I don’t know if the project is feasible.

As regards, Edith’s concerns on generating awareness and insuring maximum attendance to the event, I think all the committees should get involved in making sure that all these alumni are contacted through e-mails, phone calls and text messaging Aside from on-air plugs, press releases, web sites reports, we can also have banners and posters placed in some strategic places in Manila to generate awareness.

Another way to create enough stir is to revive the Coffee Hour and through this program, these students will have a chance to hear some encouraging and inspiring stories from the alumni themselves while enjoying their free coffee/tea/cookies. To get the students attention and interest, we can hold an exhibit of old photos, books, uniforms, souvenirs and other memorabilia. Willie Jose.
